I learned so much from their talents, desires and values in life. This was wildin. Critique on normative teacher-student relationships, a Winnie the Pooh this is my hallmark christmas movie watching shirt casually bringing an umbilical cord to school, was this show and tell. Like that is a whole story on its own, and a whole life-philosophy emphasizing process over results. This teacher is 10, 10. What an awesome teacher. Those children are lucky to have her. And this little one right here is smart enough to realize how lucky she is. She will remember, and speak often about, Mrs Grierson for decades.

At age 60 I still speak about Mrs Lundquist, grade 1, Mr Trezinsky, grade3, Mr Marcos, grade7, and Mrs Yanez, grade 10. Strong imprints on my life. My one teacher who taught me far more than the education system every could. How to think critically but also to fully appreciate the history of the world. To teach is to touch lives. Her teacher seems to be doing that perfectly. Being a Winnie the Pooh this is my hallmark christmas movie watching shirt is more than just passing information and knowledge- it’s a lot more. A lot more A’s by being kind, caring, humorous and firm – you’re impacting lives of the next generation and the next.
I have always believed that any person who teaches ANY fine arts class, music, drama, painting, sculpting, etc. Has to be an exceptional person with a completely different view of life than teachers of required classes. Left Brain vs Right Brain is definitely part of the difference. Students need all kinds to become well-grounded members of the crazy world we live in. Thank God we have both ends of the spectrum as well as a huge number who can bridge that gap.

Absolutely. Art is very much about the process, the journey and the product. This last weekend my installation Voices From the Land at the Nati Frinj was ‘changed’ each time a visitor encounter it. There were laughs, quiet reflection and conversations. I had no idea what the final ‘product’ would be. Is it ‘perfect’. I have no idea, but I’m happy with the way the installation has touched those who encountered it. Tomorrow I’ll be chatting about this to a group of Year 7 students who always ask about what I make as an artist.
And I can show them one of the special objects I created from words collected from farming women in the small Wimmera town of Natimuk. What a privilege. Remember when we done art together in 1st and 2nd year. Can you imagine trying to have a Winnie the Pooh this is my hallmark christmas movie watching shirt with our art teacher. He would’ve had us suspended for even thinking such a thing. The best teachers you will remember throughout your life, not all are meant to be teachers. Earn the respect, the paper doesn’t just give it to you.
